It appears that assigning thermal expansion values (block zone thermal property expansion) takes a lot of time. It takes much longer than applying other material properties or applying stresses. Why is that?

OK - the problem is not specific to thermal expansion, but exists for all zone thermal properties (and zone fluid properties). If you use a FISH variable to assign thermal properties to a lot of zones, then it is very slow. The same is true for fluid.
I have fixed this and it will be in a future update. In the short term, it will go a lot faster if you just give a number instead of a FISH variable.
