Problem with RAM usage in 3DEC 7.0 and 9.2

Hello everyone,

Lately we have been experiencing some strangely high ram usage when working with 3DEC 7.0 and 9.2.

This is a problem because we have built some heavy models (up to 50GB for sav files) in the past that ran before with no problems, and now the software is unable to keep open when you run some routine to analyze them or even have some pics. No talk about giving them some more steps…
Trying to figure out what is happening, we realized that the use of ram has increased strangely in all cases. For example, a model of 10GB (sav file) now uses up to 50GB for running (before we commonly saw up to 30GB in RAM), and a model of 30GB (sav files) now uses up to 100GB for running (before we commonly saw up to 60GB).

Today, this causes problems in running (and analyzing) models over 15GB (sav files) because of the RAM usage. 3DEC 7.0 and 9.2 just close immediately.

We believe this is a Windows related issue. Perhaps an update has changed the configuration and RAM usage in 3DEC.

If you can help us with this issue or have any information related to it, we would appreciate it.

Best regards!

I’m not sure what to say about that. Assuming you haven’t updated the 3DEC software, then probably you are correct in that it is a Windows issue. You can try messing with the amount of memory that gets assigned to 3DEC (Tools - Options - Configuration). Sometimes people put very large numbers in here to be safe, but this can cause problems. Also check if you have changed your tolerances in 3DEC. Sometimes a change in tolerance can result in the formation of A LOT of contacts.

Hello Jim,

We have a few 3DEC projects going on where we need to run multiple models at a time to achieve the timelines.
We used to be able to run 2 (or even more) models at the same time in one machine with 128 Gb of Ram. This is now impossible due to single models taking more than half the available memory.

We know 3DEC v7 has not received updates in the recent time, so we think the problem is windows related as we began experiencing these issues recently.

We can provide sav files and simple scripts if needed.

Cheers,
Jean

Sure - you can zip and send a save file to 3decsupport@itascacg.com. Please indicate exactly what version of Windows you are running (get the OS name and version from System Information). Have you tried this on other computers? Or Linux?

We are running Windows 10 22H2 build 19045.5247.
We have this issue in multiple computers running the same version of 3dec/windows.
We cannot use Linux as per company policy.
Can you provide a mean to transfer larger files?
